FIRST Robotics is an international competition primarily for high school students. FIRST focuses on the creation of robots that can compete in a new game each year. During my high school career, I was lucky enough to participate in my high school's team, 3707. Often, the experience is described as "the hardest fun you will ever have," and I can attest to this being true. I not only learned valuable design and manufacturing skills, but I also learned how to work with and manage a team. Over the course of my years on the team, I had the opportunity to lead the CAD team and also served as the engineering co-captain in my senior year.
This is a great view from the end of a 2019 match. You can see the robot I helped design and build hanging from a platform. It’s worth noting that we were able to stay on the platform using suction, which earned us extra points at the end of the match and helped secure a world win!
Featured in this photo is the 2019 FIRST World Championship-winning robot and me. I was overjoyed in this moment, and I can’t fully express how much it meant to me then—and still does to this day.
This is another view of the field where my team and I won it all at Ford Field. The time and dedication my entire team put in to make this possible was nothing short of tremendous.
It's one thing to talk about this amazing experience, but this video from my team really encapsulates the energy and the experience as a whole.
Even though my team won the 2019 season, my senior year was still ahead of me. I was fortunate enough to continue working with amazing team members after many had graduated. We were able to build another beautiful robot, as seen in the picture on the left. This robot was designed to shoot balls into various goals, and I played a major role in its design and manufacturing. However, we were only able to compete in one competition before our season was cut short by the advance of COVID-19 in 2020. In the end, FIRST was an incredible experience where I learned countless engineering and soft skills. Finally, I would like to give a shout-out to all the friends and mentors who made this remarkable experience possible.
